The Laboratory

Location

The laboratory of the bronze artefacts and ancient weapons restoration department is located within the historical headquarters of the OPD in via degli Alfani, 78.

Restoration activity, research, training

This department deals with issues and procedures related to various types of metal artefacts, ranging from archaeological artefacts to contemporary works of art. Studies and conservation work are carried out on artefacts featuring many different kinds of alloys, processing technologies, surface qualities and treatments, and therefore also with many different issues in their alteration phenomena and structural matters.
The conservation work carried out by the laboratory includes many different artefacts: monumental-sized and smaller-sized sculptures, ancient and Renaissance artefacts exhibited indoors or outdoors; weapons and armour; trousseaux and archaeological finds; objects of applied art and contemporary and environmental artworks.
The constituent materials, including those of accessory parts and decorations, are mainly alloys of copper, iron, steel, aluminium and lead.
One of the lines of research and experimentation carried out in this department, essential for the needs of the laboratory, consists in the active collaboration with highly specialised craftsmen in the realisation of specific artefacts or the revival of ancient processing techniques.
Equal importance is given to the constant updating of modern metal restoration technologies in close connection with the OPD’s scientific laboratory. The constituent materials and alteration phenomena of metal and alloy artworks require sophisticated diagnostics, the results of which often allow a specific calibration of methodology and treatment. Scientific input is also crucial for the monitoring phase after restoration treatments and in the field of preventive conservation.
Relevant projects are carried out in collaboration with various professionals from the world of conservation, Italian and international organisations and institutions.
