The Laboratory

The objective of the Non-Invasive Diagnostics laboratory is the chemical, morphological, and structural characterisation of artworks under investigation. This encompasses the employ of techniques that exclude the taking of samples with the aim of identifying the constituent materials and those related to previous interventions, studying the conservation conditions and the chemical, physical and biological alterations of the artworks, as well as developing new diagnostic methodologies.

The information obtained (data and images) is based on the different specific interactions of the materials with radiation in the electromagnetic radiation spectrum. Investigations on artworks’ structures are carried out by means of X-rays, which provide information on their inner structure and on their conservation conditions. Chemical characterisation of surfaces can provide elemental (X-ray fluorescence), molecular (infrared spectroscopy and RAMAN) or compositional information in general (induced currents). Morphological investigations include the study of surface roughness, colour and gloss.

Used both individually and collectively, these analyses are often pivotal in the development of a conservation project. Certain analyses are repeated during the restoration and are a means of objectively testing and verifying the results of the operations carried out in conservation treatment.
