The library

Recently established, the ‘Ugo Procacci’ Library is located on the second floor of the Opificio’s historical headquarter in the Via degli Alfani 78, and specialises in art conservation and restoration.

Catalogue

The entire library collection is catalogued and open access in the OPAC (on-line catalogue) of the IRIS Association of Libraries:

Sections

The library comprises various open-shelf sections arranged in study areas (AS: Aree di Studio), corresponding to the restoration departments and the Training Programs of the Opificio’s Higher Education School:

  • AS/1    Stone and lithoid materials and derived artefacts: wall paintings, stucco decoration, casts, mosaics, inlays, commessi or Florentine mosaic, opus sectile, statuary, and decorated surfaces of architecture.
  • AS/2    Painted artefacts on wooden and textile supports: artefacts carved in wood, bone, ivory, and wax. Artefacts made with processed, assembled, and/or painted synthetic materials.
  • AS/3    Wooden artefacts: furniture and furnishings in general; wooden inlays; professional equipment and the like; rural tools, workshop tools and the like; architectural structures and accessories.
  • AS/4    Materials and artefacts made with natural fibres, techno fibres, hide, leather, and feathers; clothing; woven fabrics and yarns; furnishings and accessories such as carpets, tapestries, wall hangings, antependia, and the like.
  • AS/5    Glass, ceramic, metal and alloy materials and artefacts: earthenware, porcelain and glassware; stained glass; terracotta sculptures; metals; bronzes; weapons/armour; wrought iron; stamps; seals; medals; coins; gold; silver; enamels; coral; amber; gems; glyptic.
  • AS/6    Book and archival material; works on papyrus, parchment and paper; Paper artefacts such as wall hangings, papier-mâché and globes. Photographic and film material: daguerreotypes, plates, films and prints.
  • AS/7    Musical instruments: wind (woodwind and brass), string (string and plucked instruments) and percussion.
  • AS/8    Scientific and technical equipment and tools: mechanical, optical, electrical, measuring and observation tools, audio and electronic systems.

These are accompanied by additional open-shelf sections, arranged in the Consultation Room:

  • ARCHAEOLOGY: Archaeology, Archaeological Exhibits, Industrial Archaeology, Archaeometry.
  • CONTEMPORARY ART: Contemporary Art, Contemporary Art Conservation, Contemporary Art Techniques.
  • AUCTION CATALOGUES: sorted by auction house, date, and place.
  • CONSERVATION: Conservation, History of Conservation, Conservation Theory, Science of Conservation, Topographical Conservation (by region and city), Conservation Conventions, Conservation Exhibits.
  • DICTIONARIES AND ENCYCLOPAEDIA: Dictionaries, Biographical Dictionaries, Art Dictionaries, Encyclopaedias, Art Encyclopaedias.
  • SOURCES: Art Sources.
  • ICONOGRAPHY: Iconography.
  • MUSEUMS AND GARDENS: Museums, Gardens.
  • ART TECHNIQUES: Art techniques.
  • PRESERVATION (Cultural Heritage): Cataloguing, Education, Legislation, Training, Museums.

Upon request at the library’s main desk, the dissertations produced by the OPD’s Higher Education School are available for consultation. These are arranged in the following sections according to the school’s training programs:

  • Training program PFP 2: Paintings on panel and on canvas, Wooden Sculpture

Additional sections including monographs, catalogues, other publications, and closed-shelf journals are available upon request to the library staff.

Heritage

Quantitative data updated to November 2021:

  • The total number of volumes is approximately 14.000;
  • over 300 diploma dissertations;
  • approximately 80 periodicals;
  • more than 12.000 abstracts from journals and miscellaneous works.
