The Laboratory

Location

The textiles restoration laboratory is located on the first floor of the OPD building within the Fortezza da Basso.

History

Established in 1982 in the Fortezza da Basso, it descends from the private Florentine workshop of Marietta and Alfredo Clignon, formerly located in the Vecchia Posta, the Royal Post Office, within the Uffizi.

Operatività, ricerca, formazione

This department deals with the conservation of textile and leather artefacts of various types, as well as provenance and chronology, ranging from archaeological finds to contemporary works of art.

Over the years, the new facility has endeavoured to develop restoration methodologies, especially in the field of cleaning and consolidation, that consider both the technical legacy of the past and the innovations on the international front. To this end, active contacts and partnerships with leading Italian and foreign research institutes are constantly maintained.

In line with the latest restoration theories, the department pays particular attention to matters of preventive conservation, minimum intervention and planned maintenance.
