The Institute

The Opificio delle Pietre Dure is an Institute with special autonomy within the Ministry of Culture, which operates as a centre of excellence and a national standard in the field of artworks conservation, carrying out restoration, research and advanced training activities.

The Opificio is also home to the Museum of Art in ‘pietre dure’ (semi-precious stones), a specialised library, a rich restoration archive, a scientific laboratory and a research centre on climatology and preventive conservation.

The Museum

From the rich assortment of stones to the art pieces belonging to the prestigious collection of the Medici and Lorraine families.

From conception to the final result, retrace the complete creation process of the ‘commesso’ or ‘Florentine mosaic’ in semi-precious stones, and discover the fascinating history of the art workshop founded in 1588 by Ferdinando I de’ Medici.

Monday – Saturday 8:15 am – 2:00 pm

Closed Sundays, public holidays, and June 24 for the feast of the patron saint of Florence.
