Section II: The Chapel of the Princes

Descrizione

The construction of the monumental Medici funerary chapel in San Lorenzo started in 1604, under grand duke Ferdinando I, according to the project of don Giovanni de’ Medici.

The ambitious enterprise had planned the covering of the whole Chapel with hard semi-precious stones, from the floor to the dome, with six scenes from the Old Testament and landscapes designed by Bernardino Poccetti.

The construction of the Chapel took more than two hundred and fifty years until the nineteenth century, when it was completed by the Hapsburg Lorraine family. The semi-precious stones shrine originally meant to be central altar has never been completed, even though the idea to realize it continued until 1860, with the last project by Tito Giorgi.

Projects and decorative elements never used for the decoration of the Chapel of the Princes are conserved in this room.
