Giancarlo Lanterna, a chemist who graduated in Florence in 1981, has been a member of staff at the Scientific Laboratory of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure since 1983, having succeeded in the competition for Laboratory Assistant in Chemistry. At the OPD he held the role of fifth-grade chemist officer and served as coordinator of the Opificio’s Scientific Laboratories, directing the Chemistry Laboratory 1 and working on the analysis of artistic materials — particularly polychrome materials — their conservation condition, deterioration phenomena, and the instruments, procedures and materials used in conservation.
A lecturer in chemical, diagnostic and analytical subjects relating to conservation at the SAFS of the OPD since the 1980s, he has also taught on numerous professional development and continuing education courses for conservators in public and private administrations in Tuscany and other regions. A speaker at numerous seminars and lectures on science in conservation at the science faculties of various universities, he was a contract lecturer in “Chemistry of Conservation and Cultural Heritage” at the universities of Bologna, Siena and Pisa, and at SUPSI in Lugano.
He has actively participated in projects in which the OPD was a partner: national (CNR Strategic Project and Targeted Project), regional (TEMART) and European (LabS TECH, EU-ARTECH, EPISCON, CHARISMA, IPERION-CH).
He is the author and co-author of over 100 publications in the field of science applied to conservation, as well as publications of a popular and educational character. His bibliography is frequently cited in various texts in the field of conservation.
