Sonia Caliaro is an Italian museum conservator. With a background as a conservator-restorer and a double master’s degree between the University of Neuchâtel in Museum Studies and the École du Louvre in the specialisation pathway of Exhibition Design and Preventive Conservation, she has over the years developed a particular interest in the field of museum storage.
During her professional career she has worked in several Italian cities including Florence, Rome, Venice, Padua, Modena, Cento and Pavia, and in a number of countries abroad including Switzerland and China. Since 2018 she has collaborated with ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property) as a consultant, specifically on the development of storage area projects at national and international level. A specialist in the RE-ORG Method — a guide to the reorganisation of museum storage developed by ICCROM and UNESCO — she carried out the first RE-ORG project on Italian territory in collaboration with the Cultural Heritage Service of the Emilia-Romagna Region, the Museo Civico di Modena, the Musei Civici di Cento and the ICCROM team.
Since 2019 she has taught on training programmes for museum professionals and university students through collaborations with SUPSI (University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland) in Lugano and the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence. Co-founder of the RE-DEPOT project, she is also involved in the online dissemination and promotion of awareness of preventive conservation issues.
